Meet the Artist: Ashley Wall

Ashley is an artist, who has shown nationally and internationally. She is also a teacher of young artists, aspiring artists, and individuals(artists) seeking healing through the arts. They also enjoy being outdoors and exploring and soaking up nature in as great a quantity as possible. Much of her art contains elements of time, space, and peace.

Ashley’s cancer journey started at a young age. At the age of 5, her paternal grandfather passed away from colon cancer. Around age 9, her best art friend was battling spinal cancer. At age 15, their mother was diagnosed with breast cancer. They received their driving hours transporting their mother on her chemo days. At 18, her mother had a recurrence that would take her away just two years later.

A few months prior to her mother’s passing, Ashley had been accepted into the studio arts program at Brigham Young University. There, art became a place for processing her grief and pain. After she graduated as the Outstanding Graduating Student with a Bachelors of Fine Arts, she became an elementary art teacher. Her own art practice fell by the wayside as her energy was diverted to her students.

At age 27, Ashley found a lump in her left breast, and the throes of her personal cancer battle began soon after her 28th birthday. Art returned to the forefront to process and find peace. She was often found cross stitching in wait rooms for appointments, finding tiny ways to reintroduce art-making into the regular.

One and a half years after the diagnosis, she received an honorable mention at Springville’s 35th Annual Spiritual & Religious Art of Utah for her piece, Seven Days, in which she filmed the sky from her mother’s gravesite on her toughest cancer days.

Ashley originally signed up to attend an Image Reborn retreat close to her 1st anniversary from diagnosis, but due to COVID it was canceled and she would have to wait for nearly another year before she could attend. During this time, she found support through participation in many Alumni Army Continued Wellness activities offered by Image Reborn as well as an art therapy group in Chicago that was doing online sessions due to COVID. Ever since, she has continued making art with the intent to process and heal from the mental load of the cancer journey.
