SUMMARY:Honoring Grief - Circle\, Yoga\, and Sound Bath
DESCRIPTION:Click here to Register \nINTRODUCTION:\nWhile we often spend many moments of an Image Reborn breast cancer retreat deep belly laughing together\, we also hold space for a lot of tears. If you’ve attended a retreat within the last few years\, you likely participated in a grief circle led by one of our incredible\, experienced grief facilitators. This is because we are big believers in the power of grief-tending and have witnessed how sharing grief in community opens us up for deeper connections – to ourselves and to others. It can also open our hearts to experience profound gratitude and joy. \nAt the beginning of 2024\, Image Reborn began hosting virtual monthly grief circles to maintain an ongoing\, safe space for practicing this modality of self-care and to promote a third place for deep connection. \nWHAT TO EXPECT AT THIS SPECIAL 2-HOUR EVENT:\nIn honor of our upcoming 25th Annual Celebration of Life Gala\, and as we ease into breast cancer awareness month\, we warmly invite our community of alumni\, healers\, connectors\, donors\, volunteers\, friends and family to join us in a sacred circle of holding grief for the losses we have experienced as a result of breast cancer. Our intention is to hold the gentlest of care for whatever is heavy in your heart. \nFirst\, Mindy Relyea\, Grief Advocate and Certified End-of-Life Doula\, will open our circle with a share about the grief-tending process. An invitation to check in with yourself will be offered and the circle will be opened to sharing\, if desired. Guests are also welcome to participate through active listening and witnessing if sharing is not desired. Your presence is all we need to create this supportive gathering. \nFollowing our share\, Julia Moench-Parent\, Clinical Mental Health Counselor\, will offer some helpful tools and guidance for navigating the waves of grief. How do we integrate grief into our daily lives\, so that we can simultaneously acknowledge and respect our grief and also move forward in life\, appreciating the incredible world and beauty that are also part of this life. \nAnd finally\, we will conclude our evening with a soul-hugging  yoga practice led by Susan Basmajian\, Yogi and Reiki Master\, accompanied by singing bowls played by Mindy Relyea. We hope you will leave feeling a sense of release and an embodiment of warmth and gratitude. \nWHAT THIS CIRCLE IS NOT:\nThis is not a therapy session. It is not a place to placate\, fix\, or offer feedback or advice to any other participant. No grief is too big or too small for this circle\, and you do not need to share to participate. Your presence is all that is required. \nWHEN AND WHERE:\nOctober 3\, 2024 at 6:30-8:00 pm MT\nW Design Collective\n2408 Kentucky Ave\, Holladay\, UT 84117 \nWHAT TO BRING AND OTHER LOGISTICAL STUFF: \n\nPlease bring a yoga mat\, beach towel or blanket\, and an eye pillow (if desired). We will have a few extras on-hand but not enough for every person.\nWear comfortable clothing for doing gentle yoga and getting cozy for a sound bath.\nParking is available onsite.\nTo ensure comfort for all\, participation is limited to 18.\n\nWHO WILL FACILITATE: \nMindy Relyea\, Grief Advocate \nMindy first came to Image Reborn in 2018\, offering her expertise and gentle\, patient guidance on all things grief-related. In the past\, she has facilitated several weekend renewal retreats and has continued to provide counsel and leadership in educating our facilitators and providers in grief processing.\nHer resume is extensive – working in the nonprofit realm for much of her career\, providing end-of-life doula services and leadership for those entering the field\, and creating intimate and conference-level spaces that promote conversations about death and dying and life and living. She has offered grief sharing circles at Image Reborn retreats; presented at other organization events\, such as at the Young Survivor Coalition Summit and Ever Presence Symposium; as well as at many corporation team-building events. \nJulia Moench-Parent\, CMHC\nJulia comes to Image Reborn as a valued retreat Alumni\, having attended their first retreat in 2017. Since then\, Julia has offered countless hours of volunteer service\, mentorship and friendship\, and has modeled what self-care and compassion looks like through their own healing journey. For the past year\, Julia has also become a facilitator of grief-sharing circles offered at retreats.| \nJulia graduated in 2017 with their Masters in Clinical Mental Health Counseling from the University of Phoenix.  Prior to moving to Moving Forward Counseling full-time\, she worked for the past 7 years in a dual-diagnosis and mental health treatment facility in both their residential and outpatient programs in a multitude of roles.  She has been at Moving Forward Counseling for over a year\, and is the Clinical Director for their outpatient mental health program. She has had training and certifications in a multitude of different modalities such as: ART\, EMDR\, trauma-informed art therapy\, grief/loss\, mindfulness\, DBT\, CBT and ACT.  She enjoys working with adults and adolescents looking for support with trauma\, anxiety\, depression\, BPD\, substance and is LGBTQ+ and autistic friendly. \nWhen not working Julia enjoys gardening\, creating art\, and binge watching TV shows with their family.\n\n\nSusan Basmajian\, BA\, 500-Hour Registered Yoga Teacher and Reiki Master\n\nSusan Basmajian has practiced and studied yoga\, meditation and yogic philosophy for 34 years. With close to 50 years in the field of education\, she blends her yoga practice\, teaching background and life experience to offer private and small group workshops on a variety of yoga subjects. Susan is a 500 Hour RYT registered with Yoga Alliance. \nAfter experiencing breast cancer in 2004\, Susan became grounded more deeply into her yoga practice. Yoga provided her with clarity to make better decisions concerning her cancer. The practice was essential in her recovery\, as it increased her vitality\, improved her sleep and helped her manage the stress associated with cancer. In 2005 Susan became a Patient Navigator with the American Cancer Society and Community Hospital of the Monterey Peninsula. She has mentored women with breast cancer and supported them through surgery and recovery\, often introducing them to the therapeutic benefits of a regular yoga practice. Susan teaches for the Image Reborn Foundation which offers breast cancer retreats for women experiencing a breast cancer diagnosis. Susan teaches yoga privately in Salt Lake City\, UT and online. She believes a regular yoga practice is transformative\, as it creates physical\, mental and spiritual well-being. \n\nClick here to Register

It can also open our hearts to experience profound gratitude and joy. \nWHY NOW:\nFollowing your retreat\, you may begin to notice a desire to tap back into this inner wisdom and deep connection you gleaned from reflecting on and sharing your grief in such a safe\, sacred place. New in 2024\, Image Reborn is now offering a monthly\, virtual “Grief and Loss Circle” to help you continue this practice of honoring and releasing emotions within a community who already understands and supports you. \nWHAT TO EXPECT:\nWe will start each session with a self-check in for your personal reflection. How are you feeling in this moment? No grief or joy is too big or too small. If nothing comes up for you\, that is also completely fine. No intention is needed other than the desire to be present and supportive of yourself and others. You may choose to share\, or you may choose to only listen. At the end of the session\, you will be invited to share your name and contact info with the group\, if you choose to do so. \nWHAT THIS CIRCLE IS NOT:\nThis is not a therapy session. It is not a place to placate\, fix\, or offer feedback or advice to any other participant. \nWHEN AND WHERE:\nThe first Thursday of every month 6:30-8:00 pm MT via Zoom. Please choose a cozy space for yourself where you feel comfortable and are able to be present and free of distractions. \nWHO WILL FACILITATE:\nOur beautiful\, experienced team of grief facilitators each has her own way of guiding the group through a process of honoring grief and then releasing it. Here is a closer look at each of the facilitators leading this series\, followed by a schedule of sessions to be offered this year. \n\nFebruary 1 – Tara Pennington\nMarch 7 – Julia Moench-Parent\nApril 4 – Mindy Relyea\nMay 2 – Mindy Relyea\nJune TBD\nJuly 11 (first Thursday is July 4) – Mindy Relyea\nAugust 1 – Julia Moench-Parent\nSeptember 5 – Mindy Relyea\nOctober 3 – Special in-person/Virtual (hybrid) event – Julia Moench-Parent\, Susan Basmajian (yoga); details to come\nNovember 7 – Mindy Relyea\nDecember 5 – Julia Moench-Parent\n\nMindy Relyea will be facilitating the circle on May 2nd: \n\nMindy first came to Image Reborn in 2018\, offering her expertise and gentle\, patient guidance on all things grief-related. In the past\, she has facilitated several weekend renewal retreats and has continued to provide counsel and leadership in educating our facilitators and providers in grief processing. \nHer resume is extensive – working in the nonprofit realm for much of her career\, providing end-of-life doula services and leadership for those entering the field\, and creating intimate and conference-level spaces that promote conversations about death and dying and life and living. She has offered grief sharing circles at Image Reborn retreats; presented at other organization events\, such as at the Young Survivor Coalition Summit and Ever Presence Symposium; as well as at many corporation team-building events. \n\nClick here to Register

She is also a teacher of young artists\, aspiring artists\, and individuals(artists) seeking healing through the arts. They also enjoy being outdoors and exploring and soaking up nature in as great a quantity as possible. Much of her art contains elements of time\, space\, and peace. \nAshley’s cancer journey started at a young age. At the age of 5\, her paternal grandfather passed away from colon cancer. Around age 9\, her best art friend was battling spinal cancer. At age 15\, their mother was diagnosed with breast cancer. They received their driving hours transporting their mother on her chemo days. At 18\, her mother had a recurrence that would take her away just two years later. \nA few months prior to her mother’s passing\, Ashley had been accepted into the studio arts program at Brigham Young University. There\, art became a place for processing her grief and pain. After she graduated as the Outstanding Graduating Student with a Bachelors of Fine Arts\, she became an elementary art teacher. Her own art practice fell by the wayside as her energy was diverted to her students. \nAt age 27\, Ashley found a lump in her left breast\, and the throes of her personal cancer battle began soon after her 28th birthday. Art returned to the forefront to process and find peace. She was often found cross stitching in wait rooms for appointments\, finding tiny ways to reintroduce art-making into the regular. \nOne and a half years after the diagnosis\, she received an honorable mention at Springville’s 35th Annual Spiritual & Religious Art of Utah for her piece\, Seven Days\, in which she filmed the sky from her mother’s gravesite on her toughest cancer days. \nAshley originally signed up to attend an Image Reborn retreat close to her 1st anniversary from diagnosis\, but due to COVID it was canceled and she would have to wait for nearly another year before she could attend. During this time\, she found support through participation in many Alumni Army Continued Wellness activities offered by Image Reborn as well as an art therapy group in Chicago that was doing online sessions due to COVID. Ever since\, she has continued making art with the intent to process and heal from the mental load of the cancer journey.
