Image Reborn Retreat Attendee – Julie Griffin Huss
Pampered is the word. Many aspects of cancer treatment are so far to the other extreme of pampered that you lose your identity (…or sometimes just wish you could!) From before I even arrived, ’till …well, until days afterward… I felt like a queen again.
It is so helpful to be with others who have walked the road you have, and visited the places you’ve been. I have a very strong network of friends and family, and some from both groups who have even been through breast cancer also. This is different though, in that cancer is the reason you are there together. In our group we had the entire spectrum — from a fabulous lady who was 15 years out from her diagnosis and treatment (and had very few of the options many of us do today) to a gal who was in the very thick of her therapies – and someone everywhere in between! It was so helpful to be able to say, “I’ve been there, you’ll make it” or “I hope that will work as well for me.” We had so many phases, and treatments, and individual circumstances represented.
And the truth of the matter is, we didn’t actually talk about cancer itself all that much. On the outside, you question ‘do I really want to go to a retreat about THAT?’ but it was not so much about cancer as it was surviving all the different phases; and better yet, thriving! We developed an instant sisterhood, and bonded so quickly. Months later, many of us are still in regular contact with one another; following lives, and children, successes and setbacks.
When I heard about the retreats, I found it difficult explaining or justifying why I ‘deserved’ to participate… I’m through it, I’m on the recovery road. I was lucky, I dodged so many tough things that other ladies don’t get to…. I had good insurance and great outcomes… My surgeon and his staff was the best… I was lucky enough to have a good strong network of family and friends to help me through it all. I am so grateful that I registered for the Image Reborn retreat! What are you waiting for?!
